Though Love is greatest of the three, And Faith one step behind, It's Hope completes the trilogy, Lest Faith and Love be blind: For hopeless Love is blind with tears, And hopeless Faith with rage, But Hope has seen beyond our fears God's juster, kindlier age. God does not ask our faithful Love, Then leave us in despair, When life's misfortunes seem to prove There is no God to care: But gives us Hope to steady Faith, And in our grief restore Love's confidence that even death Is but and opening door. God gives us Hope, if Hope we lack Of these three gifts to man, That Faith may never turn its back On all that Love began, But strive against outrageous odds, Our new destructive powers, To build a world more truly God's, And therefore truly ours.
