Crosby, Fanny J.
Fanny Jane Crosby
FANNY JANE CROSBY (1820-1915) was the most prolific and influential writer of gospel songs in American history, and was also a concert singer, organist and harpist. At the age of six weeks, she was blinded for life because of improper treatment of an eye infection. Fanny began writing verse at the age of eight; studied at the New York City School for the Blind and later taught there, attracting the attention of prominent individuals including United States presidents. Because of her poetic gift, she married Alexander Van Alstyne, a blind musician, who also taught at the New York school. She wrote texts for the minstrel songs and cantatas of George F. Root and others, publishing several books of secular verse. At the age of 44, she began to write hymns, producing 8,500 texts, many set to music by the day's leading gospel song composers and published, mostly by the Biglow and Main Company, which was later acquired by Hope. She was also active as a devotional speaker and a counselor until she was past 90 years of age and wrote two autobiographies. "Blessed Assurance" and "To God Be the Glory" are probably her most enduring hymns. That her hymns span three centuries, there is no doubt as six of her texts all written in the nineteenth century have been included in Hope's new hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
