Lowry, Robert
Robert Lowry
ROBERT LOWRY (1826-1899) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was a popular preacher and orator. He is perhaps best remembered for his contribution in writing gospel hymns and tunes. Lowry was educated at Bucknell University and served Baptist pastorates in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. He was also professor of literature at Buckness University (1869-1875) and received his DD. Degree there in 1875. He succeeded William Bradbury as editor of Sunday School song collections, and collaborated with William H. Doane and others in many publications for Biglow and Main, New York City. That company was acquired by Hope in 1922. "We're Marching to Zion" and "Shall We Gather at the River?" are his most famous hymns. Six of his hymn tunes have been included in the new Hope hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
