MICHAEL ROBERT NEWBOLT (1874-1956) was born in Dymock, Gloucestershire, England. Educated at St. John's College, Oxford, and ordained an Anglican priest in 1900. Vicar of St. Mary's in Affley, he was principal of the Missionary college in Dorchester, He later served churches in Brighton and Chester. He is best known for his 1916 alteration of George Kitchin's hymn, "Lift High the Cross", which was included in HYMNS ANCIENT AND MODERN and became the definitive version of that hymn. This is represented in the U.S. and Canada by the Hope Publishing Company and appears in their new hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001) as #287.
