Vaughan Williams, Ralph
Ralph Vaughan Williams
RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS (1872-1958) was a most significant English composer in the 20th century and strongly influenced contemporary hymnody. The son of Arthur Vaughan Williams, and Anglican priest, he was born in the vicarage in Down Ampney. He received early training in piano, violin, and theory. He continued his formal education at Charterhouse School, the Royal College of Music, and Trinity College, Cambridge, with advanced music study in Berlin and Paris. He served as organist and choirmaster of St. Barnabas Church, South Lambeth. He was music editor of
The English Hymnal
(1906), and he co-edited with Martin Shaw and Percy Dearmer
Songs of Praise
(1925, 1931). He composed six symphonies, several major works for chorus and orchestra, operas, ballets, film music, chamber music and three organ preludes on Welsh hymn tunes. He was a pioneer in researching English folk song and used many of the tunes as settings for hymns.
