ORLANDO GIBBONS (1583-1625) was a son of the town musician. He studied at King's College, where he was a choir singer at age 13. He became organist of the Chapel Royal in 1605, a position held until the end of his life. He received his education at Cambridge (MusB, 1606) and Oxford University (DMus, 1622). He was organist at Westminster Abbey from 1623. He composed church music during the English protestant reformation, including over 25 verse anthems, hymn tunes, and services, as well as instrumental suites, keyboard music, madrigals, and polyphonic lieder. He wrote settings that are simple, syllabic, and usually in four parts. Gibbons died suddenly of a stroke and was buried at Canterbury Cathedral.
