Sydney Hugo Nicholson

SYDNEY HUGO NICHOLSON (1875-1947) was born in London and received his schooling at Rugby School, New College, Oxford and the Royal College of Music. He became the organist at Manchester Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, and, in 1927, founded the School of English Church Music and served as Director until his death. Nicholson was knighted in 1938 and served as musical editor of the later editions of Hymns Ancient and Modern. He is best known as the composer of the tune, CRUCIFER, for "Lift High the Cross". The copyright of which is represented in the United States and Canada by Hope Publishing Company.
