WILLIAM M. RUNYAN (1870-1957) was born in Marion, New York, the son of a Methodist minister. He showed an interest in music when he was very young, and at age 12 often served as church organist. He was ordained to the Methodist ministry at 21 and held various pastorates in Kansas. He wrote his first gospel song in 1915 and was greatly encouraged by D.B. Towner of the Moody Bible Institute. In 1924, he went to John Brown University, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, and served as pastor of the Federated Church, and editor of the Christian Workers' Magazine. Moving to Chicago, he was associated with the Moody Bible Institute. He also served as editor for Hope Publishing Company, where he co-edited The Service Hymnal with Hope's president, Gordon Shorney. He retired in 1948, and in the same year, he received the honorary Doctor of Letters from Wheaton (Illinois) College. Runyan is best known for composing the tune of the enduring classic, "Great Is Thy Faithfulness," which is still under copyright protection by Hope until 2019.
