Young, Gordon
Gordon Ellsworth Young
GORDON E. YOUNG (1919-1998) was born in McPherson, Kansas. He attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, and was a scholarship pupil at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1964, he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Sacred Music from Southwestern for his outstanding contributions to American church music. A superb organist and choral director, he served churches in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, before becoming the Organist/Choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church, Detroit, Michigan, where he served for many years. He is widely represented in the Hope catalog with both organ and choral compositions dating from 1967. FESTIVAL ALLELUIA(F 926), written in 1968, is still in print as is GORDON YOUNG'S PRELUDES (Code No. 303), a collection of hymn tunes for organ published that same year. This was the first of a dozen organ collections, the company was to publish for Dr. Young. There were also over 30 Gordon Young choral titles released during this 30-year period. He died in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, on 2 October 1998.
