Robert A. Harris

ROBERT A. HARRIS (b. 1938) is currently a Professor Emeritus at Northwestern University's Bienen School of Music. He also serves as Director of Music and Choirmaster at the Winnetka Congregational Church in Winnetka, IL. Dr. Harris held the position of Professor of Conducting and Director of Choral Organizations at NY from 1977 to 2012. Active as a conductor, composer, clinician, lecturer and adjudicator, he has also held guest professorships in conducting at Wayne State University in Detroit, the University of Texas in Austin, and the University of South Africa in Pretoria. Harris earned his doctorate degree in Composition and Theory from Michigan State University. His composition teachers include Ruth Wylie, Bernard Rogers, Henry Cowell, and H. Owen Reed. As a composer, Harris has been the recipient of numerous commissions from various schools and musical organizations. His compositions, especially those of the choral genre, can be found in the catalogues of several of America's leading publishers (Boosey and Hawkes, Oxford University Press, Alliance Music, Walton Music, Kjos Music, Mark Foster). His choral works have received performances throughout the United States and Canada, in several European countries, as well as South America and South Africa.
