Nelson, Leon
Leon Nelson
LEON NELSON has enjoyed a long and distinguished career of almost 60 years in church music, the past 37 years serving fulltime in two of the largest Presbyterian Churches in the Chicago area. His formal education includes Moody Bible Institute, Trinity College, and Northwestern University, with degrees in organ, church music and choral conducting. He studied organ with Robert Rayfield, Robert Lodine, Lillian Robinson, and Paul Manz, and conducting with Robert Carbaugh, John Paynter and Paul Aliapoulios. In June of 2008, Leon retired from full-time church music serving the past 14 years as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church, Arlington Heights, IL. He directed the 70-voice Chancel Choir, organized a concert series and developed a Men’s Chorus and a Chamber Singers ensemble. Nelson held a similar post at First Presbyterian Church, Deerfield, IL for 23 years where he maintained a large music program and developed a concert series that was nationally recognized, as well as an annual organ competition that attracted young organists from all over the United States. Nelson was Principal Guest Organist at Moody Memorial Church in Chicago, where he played for Sunday evening services, (1978-98), and for eight years was organist for “Songs in the Night” radio program broadcast over 300 stations worldwide. In May, 2012, he retired as University Organist at North Park University, Chicago, where he taught organ and music history. He served there for 28 years. He is currently Director of Traditional Music at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Arlington Heights, IL where he directs the Sanctuary Choir. He reviews new handbell music for “The Diapason”, an international magazine devoted to the organ, church music, and the harpsichord.
