FRED PRATT GREEN (1903-2000)CBE, was born in Liverpool, England and is one of a handful of Englishmen to be honored as a Fellow of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada.

He received an honorary doctorate from Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia in 1982. He also achieved the rare privilege of being honored soon after his 90th birthday by the Queen for his services to hymnwriting. After distinguished service in England as a Circuit Minister, Superintendent and Chairman of District of the Methodist Church, this poet turned his pen to hymnwriting. In twenty years, through the seventies and eighties, provided a corpus of material, the use of which has spanned the countries of the world and the denominations which still divide the Church. For the last ten years of his life he lived in a Methodist retirement home in the Cathedral City of Norwich, England. His hymns are controlled in the U.S. and Canada by the Hope Publishing Company and they can all be found in two volumes THE HYMNS AND BALLADS OF FRED PRATT GREEN Code No. 883 and LATER HYMNS AND BALLADS AND FIFTY POEMS Code No. 427. Twenty two of his hymn texts appear in Hope's new hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001). On 22 October 2000, at the ripe old age of 97 he died quietly in his sleep.
