Hurd, David
David Hurd
DAVID HURD (b. 1950) is Professor of Church Music and Organist at The General Theological Seminary and Director of Music at The Church of the Holy Apostles (Episcopal), New York City. Formerly he has held positions at Trinity Church, the Church of the Intercession, and All Saints Church, all in New York City, and at Duke University. A graduate of New York's High School of Music and Art, his principle music studies were at the Juilliard School, Oberlin College, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He holds the degree of Doctor of Music, honoris causa, from the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale. He has received honorary doctorates also from The Church Divinity School of the Pacific, Berkeley, CA, and from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, IL. He received first prizes in organ playing and in improvisation at the International Congress of Organists in 1977. He concertizes throughout North America under the representation of Phillip Truckenbrod. Dr. Hurd is also a composer with many compositions published separately and in a variety of anthologies and hymnals. Hope released his popular Christmas choral fantasia entitled "Gloria, Gloria" Code #1954 several years ago. His tune ANDUJAR appears with Richard Wilburn's "A Stable Lamp Is Lighted" as #206 in WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
