DONALD PAUL HUSTAD (1918-2013) was born in Sioux Agency, Yellow Medicine Co., Minnesota. His undergraduate degree was from John Fletcher College and he received both the M.Mus and D.Mus from Northwestern University. He also earned diplomas as an Associate of the American Guild of Organists (AAGO) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO), London. From 1961 to 1967 he was organist for the Billy Graham Crusade. In 1950 Don became a part time editor for the Hope Publishing Company, a relationship he was to continue for the next 50 years. In this capacity, he directed or edited six major hymnals publishied by the company. A fine choral director and composer, Hope released some 50 of his choral works during this period. He was Senior Professor of Church Music at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and previously taught at Olivet Nazarene University and Moody Bible Institute. His most recent publications include JUBILATE II: Church Music in Worship and Renewal (1993, Hope Publishing Co.) and TRUE WORSHIP: Reclaiming the Wonder & Majesty (1998, Hope Publishing Co.) Most of his published organ settings are available from Hope, and THE WORSHIPING CHURCH: A Hymnal, which he edited in 1990, is in wide use across the country. In 2000, Hope released FAVORITE ORGAN HYMNS, The Concert Version Code No. 8016. These are recital pieces Dr. Hustad used with great success over the years. There are seven hymn credits for Don in Hope's newest hymnal, WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
Sadly, Don passed away on June 22, 2013, and his wife of over 70 years, Ruth, followed him shortly on July 18. They are survived by three daughters, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. To view a copy of their "Worship Service of Thanksgiving"
