Leavitt, John
John Logan Leavitt
JOHN LEAVITT (b. 1956) was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, and currently resides in Olathe, Kansas. His career has included more than three decades as a practicing church musician and twenty years as a University Music Professor and Director of Choral Activities. He has served as director for non-profit community choirs for both children and adults, and has been a published composer of sacred (and secular) music for his entire career. He is a doctoral conducting graduate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music which honored him in 2012 as Alumni of the Year. He has won awards from the American Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers (ASCAP), the Kansas Arts Commission, as well as many others. He has written commissioned works for multiple events, institutions, and organizations including the National Endowment for the Arts, Kansas Music Educators Association, the St. Olaf Choir, The University of Colorado, and the City of Northbrook, Illinois to name a few.
Dr. Leavitt is a regular guest conductor at Carnegie Hall in New York where many of his works have been premiered or performed. He has made several appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Much of his music and many of his arrangements have become standard repertoir, being performed regularly in more than 30 countries across the globe.
