Wyton, Alec
Alec Wyton
ALEC WYTON (b. 1921, d. 2007) was born in London, England. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Music, London and Oxford University. He received an honorary Mus. D. from Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA. In 1950 he took a position as Organist Choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral, St. Louis, MO. Four years later he took a similar position at New York City's prestigious Cathedrdal Church of St. John the Divine, where he remained for the next thirty years. He served as President of the American Guild of Organists and was a part of the editorial team that produced the influentional ECUMENCIAL PRAISE Agape/Hope Publishing (1977). From that collection came the tune SHORNEY dedicated to his friend George. This tune is #369 in THE HYMNAL 1982 (The Church Hymnal Corporation, N.Y.C.) set to Isaac Watts Holy Trinity text "How Wondrous Great, How Glorious Bright." He contributed a chapter to the Erik Routley festschrift DUTY & DELIGHT (1985) Code No. 782. Alec passed away March 18, 2007.
