Duba, Arlo
Arlo Duba
ARLO DUBA (b. 1929), a native of Platte, South Dakota, received his B.A. from the University of Dubuque in Iowa with majors in Music and Bible. His divinity and Ph.D. studies were at Princeton Theological Seminary (1955 and 1960) with a dissertation on the nature of theological language. He did post-graduate work at the Liturgical Institute, Paris, France.
An ordained Presbyterian minister, Duba spent most of his ministry in higher education. He was the Assistant Director of the Princeton Seminary Choir, and served as Chaplain and (Assistant and) Associate Professor of Religion at the Westminster Choir College before returning to the Seminar as Director of the Chapel and Lecturer in Liturgics. Jim Litton and Erik Routley served as the organist in the chapel during his time he directed Princeton Seminary worship. Duba served on the Psalter Committees of both the United Methodist and the United Presbyterian Churches, and was the Presbyterian observer/participant on the Rejoice in the Lord Committee of the Reformed Church in America.
Duba's hymn writing and psalm paraphrases were done while with the United Methodists. His splendid paraphrase of Psalm 84 "How Lovely, Lord, How Lovely," was paired with Hal Hopson's fine MERLE'S TUNE and was published as an anthem HH 3935. It was released as a hymn and has been widely used in hymnbooks ever since. It appears as #545 in Hope's new hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001). Dr. Duba is Professor of Worship Emeritus and retired Dean of the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary and now lives in retirement in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
