JOHN NESS BECK (1930-1986) was born in Warren, Ohio. His father was a football coach. John received his BA and B.Sci degrees in English from The Ohio State University. It was in the army that he began arranging for music groups. After the service, he returned to Ohio State for degrees in composition (B.Mus and MA in Music). He became a member of the faculty at his alma mater but soon left for a career as a manager of University Music House, a retail sheet music firm. He later founded (with John Tatgenhorst) Beckenhorst Press. At that time Hope had just acquired the Fred Kaan texts and asked John to set several of these. From this came both an anthem (AG 7221) and his fine tune BECK to "Help Us Accept Each Other." This hymn appears as #596 in Hope's new hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
