Parker, Alice
Alice Parker
ALICE PARKER (b. 1925), composer, conductor and teacher, was born in Boston, MA. She has become internationally known and respected for her individual voice and her passionate involvement in the choral art. A graduate of Smith College and the Juilliard School, she has received three honorary doctorates and the Smith College Medal for 'filling countless lives with song.' Her works include four operas, twenty-five cantatas, and numerous chamber works as well as many hymns and anthems. Her settings of American folk songs, hymns and spirituals in collaboration with Robert Shaw have brought her a wide following. Alice has taught Writing for Voices for many years at Westminster Choir College Summer School, and is in demand as a speaker for educational religious gatherings. She was recently honored by the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, being named a "Fellow" of that society. A number of her hymns and anthems are available from Hope and she has two hymn credits in WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
