Michael A. Baughen

MICHAEL A. BAUGHEN (b. 1930) was Bishop of Chester from 1982 to 1996. He was born on 7 June 1930 and educated in Bromley, Kent and London University. He was ordained in 1956 and was Rector of All Souls, Langham Place, London (1970 - 1982) before becoming Bishop of Chester. He and his wife, Myrtle, were married in 1956 and are the parents of three children. All are married and there are eight grandchildren. He has had particular involvement in music for congregational worship and has served as editor of YOUTH PRAISE, YOUTH PRAISE II and PSALM PRAISE, and as consultant editor of HYMNS FOR TODAY'S CHURCH (1982), all products published by Jubilate Hymns Ltd. He has composed the music for more than 30 hymns, psalms and spiritual songs, as well as writing the words for many. Bishop Baughen was a member of the House of Lords from 1987 to 1996. In November 1994, he received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Liverpool. In North America all of his hymns are represented by the Hope Publishing Company and five of them appear in WORSHIP & REJOICE. When the Bishop retired in August 1996, the Baughens returned to London to live.
