Chappel, Paul
Paul Chappel
2 products
PAUL CHAPPEL (b. 1967) Paul Chappel has lived all his life in the small town of Dundas, Ontario surrounded by remarkable natural beauty. The love of all things natural comes from the area, but also from the lessons of his parents that all of creation is beautiful. This love of natural wonder creeps in to almost all of Paul's works, especially the programmatic compositions intended to give images of Canadian beauty.
In his earlier years, Paul studied organ and harpsichord, all the theoretical subjects, composition, copying and typography, and conducting, earning a diploma from the Royal Canadian College of Organists in 1990. Always seeking newer ideas and ways to look at musical form, Paul travelled all over studying wherever he could find people to work with and new challenges. He studied with Jon Washburn and the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Dr. Patricia Wright, Elma Miller, and in England many remarkable people, topped off with John Rutter who was a major influence. Paul developed a very close, avuncular relationship with Gerald Bales, that fighting force for Canadian music. Whether talking about how to play Howells, conduct or most importantly write for an orchestra, Gerald drove Paul into a strong style, always encouraging and caring.
After years as an organist and choirmaster doing music ministry in many local churches, Paul has had to retire from active playing due to medical reasons, and now devotes his time to writing both music and the spoken word and teaching. He has completed a book of clean limericks and begun another. Paul has also finished his first novel, of course of humorous fiction.
In July 2005 Paul was given an Honorary Life Membership of the Royal Canadian College of Organists for his work as their Archivist/Historian, membership on the National Council and work in the community. As a lay preacher, Paul officiates at about forty funerals a year for families without a church connection or those who don't feel the need of an ordained person. The chance to meet with families and design a celebration of their loved one gives Paul real energy.
Paul loves to garden, especially interesting herbs, vegetables, and roses. The second part of that is that Paul loves to cook with all of these things. His cooking was featured in a Hamilton Spectator feature in December 2005.
Paul and Sara live with Paul's dad since the death of his mother in 2003, and they share the house with three pairs of tiny finches and one button quail whom they love. Paul regularly updates a weblog with thoughts concerning composing and writing at
