William Jensen Reynolds

WILLIAM J. REYNOLDS (1920-2009) was a church musician: a composer, arranger, editor, educator, and hymnologist. He was the author of a hymnology textbook, A SURVEY OF CHRISTIAN HYMNODY (1964); two hymnal handbooks: HYMNS OF OUR FAITH (1964), and COMPANION TO BAPTIST HYMNAL (1976); a contributor to HANDBOOK TO THE BAPTIST HYMNAL (1992); and a consultant for THE SACRED HARP (1991 ed.). In 1999 Milburn Price and David Music updated his SURVEY OF CHRISTIAN HYMNODY (Code No. 8017) published by Hope. He was the author of a dozen books and the composer of more than 700 choral anthems, hymn tunes, children's songs, etc. He served as music director for various meetings of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Baptist World Alliance (1958-1986). A past-president of The Hymn Society of America, he was named a Fellow in 1992. He was Distinguished Professor of Church Music, Emeritus, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX.
