William Henry Monk

WILLIAM HENRY MONK (1823-1889) was music editor for the first three editions of the historic English hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861, 1875 and 1889). He first studied music with private instructors, served as organist for several London churches and was finally appointed to St. Matthias, Stoke Newington, a position he held until his death. During his years at St. Matthias he taught music at King's College, London, the School for the Indigent Blind, the National Training School for Music and Bedford College. He was given the honorary D.Mus. degree from Durham University in 1882. Monk also edited the Parish Choir (1840-1851) and contributed some 50 hymn tunes to Hymns Ancient and Modern (1861, 1875 and 1889).
