JEFFERY ROWTHORN (b. 1934) was born in Wales and educated at Cambridge and Oxford Universities.

He spent 19 years teaching first at Union Theological Seminary and then at Yale Divinity School. In 1973 he helped establish the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University. After 14 years as a professor of liturgics, he was elected in 1987 as Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. The wheel came full circle when he was appointed Bishop in Charge of the Convocation of American Episcopal Churches in Europe with his office at the American Cathedral in Paris. He retired from his position in Europe at the end of 2001. He has been writing hymns for three decades now, and in 1992 Yale University Press published A NEW HYMNAL FOR COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS which he edited with Dr. Russell Schulz. The Hope Publishing Company represents his most popular hymns, "Creating God, Your Fingers Trace" and "Lord, You Give The Great Commission," both of which can be found in many contemporary American hymnals.
