Stanford, Charles V.
Charles Villiers Stanford
CHARLES VILLIERS STANFORD (1852-1924), a musically talented child, performed one of his compositions at age 10 at Dublin Royal Theater. He was a choral scholar at Queen's College, Cambridge (1870) and organist (1873) of Trinity College, Cambridge (BA, 1874 and MA, 1877). He studied in Leipzig and Berlin with Carl Reinecke and Friedrich Kiel (1874-76). Stanford then became professor of composition and orchestra at the Royal College of Music when it opened in 1883. He held various other posts as music director and teacher of such notables as Walford Davies, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst. He was knighted in 1902 and is buried in Westminster Abbey. His tune ENGLEBERG is used in the Worship & Rejoice hymnal.
