Neander, Joachim
Joachim Neander
JOACHIM NEANDER (1650-1680) was called "the Paul Gerhardt of the German Calvinists." He was trained at the Padagogium in Bremen, where his father taught, and later at the Gymnasium Illustre. A part of the rebellious student life of his day, he became convicted by the preaching of Theodore Under-Eyck in St. Martin's Church, Bremen, and was converted. He tutored at Frankfurt and Heidelberg, and in 1674 he was appointed rector of the Latin School at Düsseldorf, sponsored by the Reformed Church. Neander was briefly suspended from the school because of his Pietist associations and activity. In 1679 he went back to Bremen to serve as an unordained assistant to Under-Eyck at St. Martin's Church. Neander died at age 30 of tuberculosis. He wrote some 60 hymns, many of which express his love of nature, and he provided tunes for several hymns as well. He published
Geistliches Bundes-und-Dank-Lieder
and
Alpha und Omega Joachimi Neandri Glaubes und Liebesübung
(1680). His most familiar hymn today (translated by Catherine Winkworth) is "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," and is included in the Worship & Rejoice hymnal.
