Brooks, Phillips
Phillips Brooks
PHILLIPS BROOKS (1835-1893) was one of America's greatest preachers in the last half of the 19th century, gifted in appearance and personality. He attended the Boston Latin School, and in 1855 received his AB degree from Harvard. He studied for the ministry at the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA, and was ordained in 1859. He served the Church of the Advent in Philadelphia and three years later became rector of Holy Trinity Church. In 1869 he became rector of Trinity Church, Boston, where he served for 22 memorable years. He had many of his sermons published, and they are still read widely. In 1885 he received the DD degree from Oxford. He had memorized 200 hymns as a child and frequently quoted them in his sermons. In 1891 he was consecrated Bishop of Massachusetts, but has served for only two years when death took him. His most famous hymn text is "O Little Town of Bethlehem," which can be found in our Worship & Rejoice hymnal.
