HENRY WILLIAMS BAKER (1821-1877) has a secure place in hymn history as the "editor-in-chief" of the historic
Hymns Ancient and Modern
(1861). He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, ordained in 1844 and appointed vicar at Monkland, near Leominster, and remained there until his death. He served for almost 20 years as chairman of the committee which compiled
Hymns Ancient and Modern
. Although criticized as "authoritarian and ruthless" in his editing decisions, there is no doubt that he profoundly influenced hymn singing of the Anglican community, and thus all of Christendom, for almost a century. One famous translated text of his is "Of the Father's Love Begotten," available in the Worship & Rejoice hymnal.
