Words By
Daniel Charles Damon
God, we praise you for the women who have taught us to be strong, who have held us, who have raised us with a prayer and with a song. Sarah laughed to hear the promise-- God would bless her with a son; Sarah laughed and Sarah doubted till she saw what...

Everbody Ought to Treat a Streanger Right 15a

Words P.D., arranged by Dan Damon
Everybody Ought to Treat a Stranger Right – This traditional blues song gives us the common sense message of human kindness. As is the custom with the blues, I altered the lyrics a little. I recorded this with my band on the album Beautiful Darkness. Blind Willie Johnson recorded this song in 1930 with two Christmas verses mixed in. I separated them out, added two verses to tell a fuller Christmas story, and recorded the Christmas version with my band on the album No Obvious Angels. According to the writer of Hebrews, some have entertained angels unawares.

Words By

God, We Praise You for the Women – This text first appeared in Garden of Joy (Hope, 2011). The original tune name, DORNAN, is for Mid Dornan, longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Richmond, CA. In 2022, I paired the text with BEACH SPRING by repeating stanza one at the end to accommodate the doubled form.

Three Strangers on their Way

Words By
Daniel Charles Damon
Three Strangers on their Way – The 100th anniversary of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada was celebrated on the campus of Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Late one night John Ambrose, Eileen Johnson, and I came upon a sculpture in the dark—Angels Unawares by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz. The work shows many people from various places and times crowded onto a raft, seeking a better life. Marcia McFee sparked the writing of this text by asking some of her friends to write a song about entertaining angels unawares. In this text I imagine Sarah’s thoughts during the encounter with strangers told in Genesis 18. The USA folk song, “Everybody Ought to Treat a Stranger Right,” helped me with the refrain. Fred Graham and Marcell Silva Steuernagel wrote tunes for this text at my request.
