How perilous the messianic call! -
to hear a voice, discover hidden pow'rs,
and feel the tempting urge to work for God
by winning wars, or fame, or dazzled hearts!
How sweet the call our true Messiah brings:
Refrain: "Come, let us be a messianic people,
loving justice, trusting love,
finding strength and giving power,
living faithfully with God."
How marvelous the messianic claim! -
a man who kneels, with simple dignity,
God's chosen leader, washing dirty feet;
to women, hope; to all, enabling love;
to men, a model; friend of every child.
How scandalous the messianic way -
befriending outcasts, going far from home,
to be rejected, captured, crucified,
and then arise, amazingly alive
in youth and elder, foreigner and slave!
How beautiful the messianic hope! -
our lives reborn, set free from dreary need
to domineer, or hide, or be enslaved,
made strong in Christ to clash, forgive, and grow,
as leaders kneel, and call us with a song:
