In the Gospels it is written plainly, so that all may see: Jesus' life of deep compassion marks the way our lives should be. Jesus sought the shunned and outcast, gave respect to women scorned, cured a leper, dined with sinners, healed a soul by madness torn. Gospel writers told the story so that we might hear and heed: Jesus moved beyond tradition where it hindered human need. In the synagogue at worship on a Sabbath, Jesus healed; ancient custom did not rule him-- to Christ's mercy it would yield. Out of habit, out of custom, we are bound by ancient fears, lacking courage to discover what must change with passing years. Holy Spirit, teach us wisdom, give us grace to see today that new world we must envision to be faithful to your way.
