1. "What can please the Holy Presence?" prophets cried. "No sacrifice! Oil and cattle, precious metal, grain and wool cannot suffice. Justice, mercy give in worship to your God!" 2. "Like a city on a hilltop," pilgrims prayed, "let Christ be shown as together we discover lands that God has always known. Justice, mercy speed the gospel of our God." 3. Ponder now an expedition trekking westward to the sea, mapping, naming, tracing, claiming mountain, prairie, rock, and tree, wholly, solely for a nation and its God. 4. Who can trace the light and shadow threaded through succeeding years -- courage, slaughter, greed, and hunger, trails of freedom, pain, and tears? "Justice! Mercy!" land and peoples cry to God. 5. Penitential celebrations point a future for our song; stories hearing, sorrows sharing, speaking truth, resisting wrong. Justice, mercy, seek together under God.
