That evening in the Friday gloom
two men have come to carry him;
they bring his body to the tomb
and make all haste to bury him.
What final gifts shall love afford:
Three women who were dear to him
bring spices for their lifeless Lord
and lose no time to care for him.
But where is he? They cry aloud
'He's gone! What have they done with him?'
What need of spices, grave or shroud?
If only they had gone with him!
Yet Christ is risen - Jesus lives!
We have not far to seek for him;
he greets us all; our hope revives,
and when we find, we speak for him.
He bears the marks of nail and thorn;
what can we think to give to him?
God grant we learn, by faith reborn
to love him and to live to him.
