In anguish Jesus prayed alone the night he was betrayed; and Judas marked him with a kiss to keep the bargain made. Then Jesus, taken under guard, was questioned and accused; the chief priests said he was to blame, and Jesus was abused. They sent him on to Pilate's court, for Pilate was the judge; in Jesus he could find no fault, despite the chief priests' grudge. The people clamored for his death and would not be denied; so Pilate, yielding to their cry, hand Jesus crucified. The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed it on his head. They dressed him in a purple cloak---- "Your Jewish king," they said. They nailed him to a Roman cross, a bandit on each side; betrayed, forsaken, mocked, and scorned, he breathed his last----and died.
