When in God's hour this world began to be,
there sprang from chaos earth and sky and sea;
before the stars, before the sunlit air,
God's spirit moved upon the waters there.
When from his heart, through countless ages long,
God spoke in prophecy and sacred song,
that so his will was known, his voice was heard,
his Spirit's breath inspired the living word.
When, one with us, to Jordan Jesus came,
the Father's sign was not in wind and flame,
as on his Son descended from above
the Spirit in the likeness of a dove.
When we recall that Pentecostal hour,
the tongues of fire, the promised word of power,
we long that more and more be shed abroad
the life-imparting Spirit of the Lord.
So, Father, hear us as we seek to build
a living church, renewed and Spirit-filled;
grant us in grace that gift for which we pray,
the Spirit's life and power in us today!
