Kirkpatrick, William J.
William J. Kirkpatrick
WILLIAM JAMES KIRKPATRICK (1838-1921) was born in Duncannon, Pennsylvania, received early musical training from his father and later studied with several recognized music teachers. He was a fife major during the Civil War, and later a furniture dealer in Philadelphia. He edited his first music collection at age 21, Devotional Melodies (1859), and thereafter compiled some 100 books, collaborating mostly with John R. Sweney, but also with H.L. Gilmour and John H. Stockton, and publishing with the John J. Hood Company, Philadelphia. Kirkpatrick wrote many favorite gospel song melodies for his publications, was a life-long Methodist, associated first with Wharton Street M.E. Church, and later as director of music for the Grace M.E. Church. Best known today as the composer of CRADLE HYMN to Away in the Manger, he assigned all of his copyrights to Hope in 1923. Five of his hymn tunes appear in WORSHIP & REJOICE, released by Hope Publishing Company in 2001.
