CARLTON RAYMOND YOUNG (b. 1926), was born in Hamilton, Ohio and served in the Air Force during World War II. A teacher, editor, composer and conductor, has the unique distinction of serving as editor of two revisions of hymnals for Methodists: THE METHODIST HYMNAL, 1966; and THE UNITED METHODIST HYMNAL, 1989. Dr. Young, known to his friends as "Sam", has served on the faculties and directed graduate studies in church music at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University; and Scarritt College; and is emeritus Professor of Church Music at Candler School of Theology, Emory University. He is a Past-President and Fellow of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada; and the first American to be named an honorary member of The British Methodist Church Music Society. Since 1971 he has been a consultant and editor (emeritus) with Hope Publishing Co., where he served as executive editor of ECUMENICAL PRAISE; the festschrift DUTY AND DELIGHT (Routley Remembered):(1985 Code No. 782) as well as OUR LIVES BE PRAISE (1990 Code No 389)(Erik Routley's Tunes and Texts). Hope also published his MUSIC OF THE HEART, John and Charles Wesley on Music and Musicians (1995)(Code No. 1592). He has nine credits in the new Hope hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001). Founder of the Agape catalog for Hope, he has a choral series of anthems (The Carlton Young Choral Series) to his credit and from retirement, continues to write and compose from the "Owls Nest" in his Nashville, TN home.
