Mason, Lowell
Lowell Mason
LOWELL MASON (1792-1872) was born in Medfield, Maine, and holds a special place in the history of church music and music education in the United States. He lived in Savannah, Georgia, for a while, working in a bank, studying harmony and composition, and serving the Independent Presbyterian Church as organist. In 1827, he moved to Boston and became president of the Handel and Haydn Society, and choir director of Bowdoin St. Church. He established the Boston Academy of Music (1833) and was eventually responsible for introducing music into the public school curriculum of Boston. He pioneered in teaching music pedagogy for 25 years, compiled and published at least 80 music volumes which are listed in Lowell Mason: the Father of Singing Among Children (1946) by Arthur L. Rich. Mason was the inspiration for William Bradbury who founded Biglow and Main of New York City. In the 20th century this company was acquired by The Hope Publishing Company. A hand-written hymn tune of his is on display at the Hope offices. Seven of his hymn tunes appear in Hope's new hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
