Stebbins, George C.
George Coles Stebbins
GEORGE COLES STEBBINS (1846-1945) was raised on a farm in New York and studied music in Rochester and Buffalo. Stebbins moved to Chicago in his early twenties where he became music director at the First Baptist Church. In 1874, he became music director in the Clarendon Street Baptist Church, Boston, and later at Tremont Temple, Boston. In 1876, he was persuaded by Dwight L. Moody to join him in evangelistic work, and he was associated with Moody and other leading evangelists for 25 years as song leader, choir organizer, composer, and co-compiler of many gospel song collections. He collaborated with Ira Sankey and James McGranahan in preparing the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of Gospel Hymns. He assigned his copyrights to Hope in 1922 and is best known as the composer of the tune for "Have Thine Own Way, Lord". Two of his tunes are found in the Hope hymnal WORSHIP & REJOICE (2001).
