Thomas Tallis
THOMAS TALLIS (1505-1585) is considered "the father of English cathedral music." He set texts in Latin and English for Catholic and Protestant royal courts. He was organist at Waltham Abbey, and he served with William Byrd as a Gentleman of the Royal Chapel. He was granted a music printing monopoly by Queen Elizabeth, the earliest such monopoly. He provided tunes for Archbishop Matthew Parker's

(c. 1560), including the famous CANON. Tallis is highly regarded for his church choral music and for his mastery of polyphony, evidenced in his motet for eight five-part choirs,
