Luther, Martin
Martin Luther
MARTIN LUTHER (1483-1546) was the leader of the 16th-century Reformation in the "Lutheran" tradition and is credited with the restoration of congregational participation in worship. He was educated at Magdeburg, Eisenach, and Erfurt. He entered the Augustinian convent at Erfurt and was ordained a priest (1507). He taught at the University in Wittenberg, where in 1517 he posted his 95 theses against papal abuses and corruption in the church. After a long open struggle, he defended his preaching and writings, denied the supremacy of the Pope and broke with Rome. He translated the Bible into German and developed liturgies for evangelical worship:
Formula missae
, 1523 and
Deutscher messe
, 1526. He wrote 37 hymns and paraphrases and composed tunes or adapted them for folk song sources. His most famous hymn is "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," to the tune EIN' FESTE BURG.
