Mohr, Joseph
Joseph Mohr
JOSEPH MOHR (1792-1848) will forever be remembered as the author of the Christmas hymn "Stille nacht! heilige nacht!" Mohr was a boy chorister in the cathedral at Salzburg, where the Mozarts had served a generation before. In 1815 he was ordained in the Roman Catholic church and went to St. Nicholas Church, Oberndorf, for two years as an assistant priest. Here he wrote his famous carol. After several other assignments he became vicar at Hintersee (1828) and then at Wagrein (1837), where he stayed until his death. "Silent Night! Holy Night" is part of our Worship & Rejoice hymnal.
