Sullivan, Arthur S.
Arthur Seymour Sullivan
Sir ARTHUR SEYMOUR SULLIVAN (1842-1900) is known for his music composed for Sir W. S. Gilbert's "Savoy Operas" (Gilbert and Sullivan operettas). He was opposed to the use of secular tunes for church music. At age 12 he became a chorister at the Chapel Royal, and at 15 he had his first anthem published by Novello. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and also at Leipzig Conservatory (1858-61). He held several organ positions before becoming professor of composition at the Royal Academy of Music (1866). In addition to his tuneful operetta music, he wrote anthems, hymn tunes, and oratorios. He edited

(1874), was knighted by Queen Victoria (1883) and was made a member of the French Legion of Honor.
