My wife, Eileen M. Johnson, was looking for something to sing on the fifth Sunday of Easter, 2021. We read John 15:1–8, the gospel reading appointed for the day, and thought of St. Patrick’s Breastplate. This is my adaptation of that old Irish prayer. Possible movements while singing:
Christ before me: forearms extended, hands palms upChrist behind me: swing arms backChrist beneath me: hands in front palms downChrist above me: raise arms above head, palms upChrist when I lie down: hands make a pillow for your headChrist when I arise: open arms to each side, palms facing each otherChrist with me: one hand on heartChrist in me: cross both hands over heart
