Bathed in Grace, the Prophet Sank

Bathed in Grace, the Prophet Sank – Reading Gracia Grindal’s hymns on the Jonah story sparked this new text. Jonah received God’s grace at every moment, especially when he was at his worst. The tune, CHIMNEY ROCK, is named for a place on the Pacific Ocean near the lighthouse in Point Reyes National Seashore. Carl Daw helped me polish this text.

Beautiful-Darkness
Words By
Daniel Charles Damon
This song celebrates the balance of darkness and light in God’s good creation. We are learning not to equate darkness with evil. It is part of our racist past that shows up in some older Christian hymns. We are learning that skin color does not make us good or bad—it is our choices that are good or bad. Cynthia Wilson recorded this song with me in February 2022. At the time she said, 'I wish there was more.' So I wrote two more verses and made it the title song when I recorded it again with my quartet for the album Beauti-ful Darkness. Take your time and enjoy the darkness and light in the jazz harmonies.

Intersex People

Intersex People – Stephanie Budwey and Marissa Adams helped me write this hymn for a worship service observing Intersex Solidarity Day at The Table in Nashville, TN. Their guidance and encouragement made this text come to life. At least one in one hundred people is intersex. 'People with intersex bodies, like anyone who is seen as different, can face stigma and discrimination in employment, education, and in healthcare settings' (GLAAD Media Reference Guide, 11th ed. www.glaad.org). In my writing I try to give voice to those whose voice has been denied or rejected. In 1986 at the Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, CA, I took some Bible courses from Michael Guinan, OFM. He spoke for three days about Genesis 1, teaching that the rhetorical device 'the heavens and the earth' implies that God also made everything in between. He said, 'This is as true now as it was the first time it was spoken.' As we learn to see the whole spectrum, we begin to celebrate the variety of creation in

The Eyes of All

The Eyes of All – My wife, Eileen M. Johnson, is a birder. I am starting to take an inter-est—I spot them, and she identifies them. We have a bird-feeder in our backyard and often watch the birds from our breakfast table. The idea for this short choral piece came to me as we were throwing seed out for the California towhees and other ground feeders.

Will We Lose the Earth Beneath Us
Words By
Daniel Charles Damon
Will We Lose the Earth Beneath Us – This hymn was written for Pastor John D. Current, Hope United Methodist Church, on El Campo Drive, South San Francisco, CA. During a conversation with John, he asked, “If we do not save the planet, who will?” As we talked, I felt the urgency of our need to care for God’s creation. My tune EL CAMPO DRIVE is a reworking of an earlier unpublished song. Lim Swee Hong wrote the tune EDINBURGH for this text at my request. Regarding his tune he wrote, “the vocables in the lower voices are inspired by many indigenous cultures from around the world. In this instance, I drew from my indigenous friends in Taiwan.”
