Hymn
O Praise the Sovereign Name of God
Words By
Carl P. Daw, Jr.
Psalm 135 has no Hebrew superscription, perhaps because it comprises numerous paraphrases and occasional verbatim quotations of other psalms and scripture passages. Stanza 1: The reference to standing in God’s house echoes similar language in Psalm 134 and may have been a factor in the adjacent ordering of these two psalms when the Book of Psalms was com-piled. This firm location in the Temple strengthens the plausible conjecture that Psalm 135 represents a set of materials brought together for liturgical use. The fifth line of this stanza reflects what Robert Alter calls an idiomatic conjunction in biblical Hebrew of the roots z-m-r (“hymn,” “sing,” “make music”) and the root n-‘-m (“sweet” or “pleasant”). Stanza 2: The direct address to the assembly in the first stanza transitions to evidence of God’s sovereignty, as manifested in creation and in history. First of all, God’s power and prerogative as Creator of all things demonstrate superiority to all other gods. Stanza 3: Second

O God, Be No Longer Silent
Words By
Carl P. Daw, Jr.
In addition to attributing this psalm to Asaph, the Hebrew superscription for Psalm 83 labels it as “a song.” Although the original psalm lists a number of hostile powers in varying degrees of proxim- ity, scholarly efforts to correlate these enumerated enemies with any particular historical situation have failed to reach a satisfying consensus. It is most likely these are simply some of Israel’s tradi- tional foes who have been grouped together for poetical purposes and whose names would not add conviction for present-day readers and singers. So no attempt has been made to include them in this paraphrase. Stanza 1: This is an almost comic scenario: the omnipotent God is silent, while the weak and unsuc- cessful antagonists make a great deal of noise. Stanza 2: This stanza is a mirror image of the first stanza: stanza 1 begins with a petition, then describes the threatening situation, while stanza 2 elaborates on the widening threat before conclud- ing with a petition. Stanza 3: The

O God, Whose Justice Rights all Wrongs

Psalm 94, which lacks a Hebrew superscription, interrupts the series of “enthronement psalms” described at Ps. 93, but it still deals with God’s sovereign power. God is portrayed here as the uni- versal judge and the avenger of wrongs. In a familiar pattern of emphasis, the psalm moves from denunciation of the wicked to celebration of the faithful, then concludes with a first-person-singular testimony. Stanzas 1–2: The denunciations of the wicked and their oppressive ways are all-too-familiar and timeless. Their subhuman behavior distances them from the very God they ignore. Stanza 3: The depravity of the first two stanzas stands in marked contrast to the people who learn —140— and obey God’s law. The phrase “its strains recall” is intended as a reminder that this psalm comes out of an aural/oral culture in which reading and praying (and memorization) were vocalized. Stanza 4: It is remarkable how far the psalm has shifted here when compared with its rather explo- sive beginnin

Once David Swore an Oath to God

Carl P. Daw, Jr.
Psalm 132 is the second-from-last of the psalms bearing the Hebrew superscription “A song of as-cents.” Within this series it serves to intensify the longing for the journey’s destination by celebrating the twofold significance of Zion: God’s dwelling-place and the seat of royal power. In many ways this psalm condenses and celebrates the narrative of 2 Samuel 6:1–7:29 (paralleled in 1 Chronicles 13:1–17:27). The yoking of these two particular concerns has proved too specific to generalize into any dynamic equivalents, so they have been allowed to stand. Stanza 1: While it is well known that David did not actually construct the Temple, he is credited in Jewish tradition as its founder. David was, after all, responsible for bringing to Zion the Ark of the Covenant, God’s dwelling-place on earth. The Temple that Solomon built could well be understood as an elaborate shelter for this holy object. Stanza 2: Psalm 132 reflects an order of events described in the narratives cited above. Thi
