While two elements of the superscription for Psalm 69 are clear enough (inscription to “the [musi- cal] leader” or “choirmaster,” attribution to David), the third element “on shoshannim” [“lilies”] is variously interpreted to mean “on the tune called ‘Lilies’” or “on the lily-shaped trumpets.” In any case, this is one of the longest prayers for help, comparable in many ways to Psalm 22. It gains both length and intensity through a double recitation of the psalmist’s woes that need relief. Stanza 1: Deep water was associated with the return of chaos and was regarded as a sign that cre- ation was being undone; in other words, the psalmist’s world is falling apart. Stanza 2: Though the psalmist has faults, they are not the cause of abuse by others; that has been the result of loyalty to God’s ways.
